Can you really call a spy photo a spy photo if an auto manufacturer — not a spy photographer — provides the image? Perhaps not, but General Motors did send a photo and a brief video clip of the all-new 2014 Chevrolet Silverado – camouflaged to the hilt, of course – undergoing testing in Arizona.
GM’s release says virtually nothing, noting only the 2014 Silverado is being put through “the final paces” of testing in Yuma, Arizona. Along with one photo of a truck undergoing water testing, we were also given brief, silent B-roll footage of a 2014 Silverado prototype hauling a loaded trailer.
Other than indicating the 2014 Silverado will “enter production in 2013,” GM isn’t revealing any other detail pertaining to the new Silverado, or its twin, the GMC Sierra. From what we’ve heard, these new trucks will not only utilize GM’s next-generation small-block V-8 (which, as we’ve reported, will gain direct fuel injection), but also make extensive use of aluminum, magnesium, and other lithe metals in order to shed weight and reduce fuel consumption.
Aesthetically, expect the new Silverado to be a progressive evolution instead of a complete revolution. While sheetmetal creases and curves continue to be obscured by padded camouflage, it’s plain to see the trucks continue to use a broad grille that spans the width of the truck, capped by a massive gilded bowtie emblem. Aerodynamics, including the sizable air dam visible beneath the front bumper, will likely be key in returning fuel economy improvements
