Donation at Army-Navy game will reflect GM’s longstanding history with US Military
During Saturday’s 114th Army-Navy Game, GM Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson will present a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado High Country 1500 crew cab pickup truck to the Achilles Freedom Team of Wounded Veterans. This is just one example, in a history of many that demonstrates GM’s support of the US Military, dating back to World War I.
GM’s commitment to the US military dates back to World War I – beginning as early as 1909 – when Major Davidson installed Colt machine guns on a Cadillac “DB” Model vehicle for demonstration of a mechanized support vehicle. The 1915 Davidson-Cadillac Armored Car had the distinction of being the first fully-armored motor vehicle to be built in the US.
During World War II, more than 113,000 General Motors’ employees enlisted for duty in WWII and as part of the massive conversion to wartime production, GM hired and trained over 750,000 new hires, including 30% women.
Fast-forwarding to recent years, GM’s dedication to US Military efforts have stayed strong.
In 2006, GM donated $250,000 to help found National Museum of the Marine Corps, and in 2012, a $100,000 grant was presented to the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation at their annual Leatherneck Ball in support their annual scholarship program.
This fall, Chevrolet expanded the industry’s most generous military discount, which covers retirees and spouses, active duty, reservists, and vets within a year of discharge.
Today, GM supports causes that assist service members, veterans and their families, such as the Achilles Freedom Team; Travis Manion Foundation; scholarships for vets and service members’ children; Cell Phones for Soldiers; Hiring Our Heroes; and more.
General Motors remains the largest commercial provider of military vehicles in history. In fact, more than 60,000 GM employees have served in the US military and today GM employs nearly 5,000 veterans, including Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson, a United States Naval Academy graduate.
Kickoff for Saturday’s game is scheduled for 3:10 p.m. EST on CBS. The Silverado donation will take place during a first-quarter timeout and will be televised later in the game. Keep checking back to FastLane for more on this initiative GM’s overall US Military support efforts.
