Chevrolet to be Official Automotive Partner of Manchester United

Chevrolet is entering into a five-year partnership agreement with Barclays Premier League giant Manchester United to become the club’s Official Automotive Partner.

In today’s announcement, Chevrolet is pledging that fans will be at the heart of its sponsorship with a constant focus on bringing the club supporters and football fans around the world closer to the game than ever before.

Details about the global partnership will be announced at a celebration event at the Shanghai Science & Technology Museum that will include representatives from Chevrolet, Manchester United and other special guests. The event will begin at 8 p.m. China Standard Time (8 a.m. EDT, 1 p.m. BST).

“Manchester United has some of the most passionate supporters of any sporting club in the world,” said General Motors Global Chief Marketing Officer Joel Ewanick. “The Chevrolet family is proud to partner with Manchester United and is fully committed to putting these fans at the center of everything we do.”

Said David Gill, Manchester United CEO: “Although part of two very different industries, Chevrolet and Manchester United share many of the same values. Like the Club, it is steeped in history having recently celebrated its centenary and it has also grown to be a global brand, selling cars in more than 140 countries. Above all, it too strives to be the best in its field and I am delighted to welcome Chevrolet as our Official Automotive Partner.”

Richard Arnold, Manchester United commercial director, said: “With 659 million United fans and followers around the world, the commitment that Chevrolet is making to football and its plans to bring these fans closer to our club is very exciting for us. This is also the first time we have teamed up with a U.S. automotive partner and with the growing popularity of the Club and English football in America, we are hoping the relationship will allow us to further expand our fan base in the country.”

Chevrolet's History

Chevrolet is an American automobile brand owned by General Motors Company (GM). Also known as Chevy, the company is headquartered at Detroit, in Michigan, in the United States. It is the top selling GM marquee and the best known brand from GM across the world. Currently offering over 20 vehicles and many different enhanced versions in its home market, right from subcompact cars to medium-duty commercial trucks, Chevrolet is one of the prominent automobile brands. Apart from US, the company caters to other countries as well, some of them being China, India, Japan, Malaysia, Middle East, Pakistan, South Korea, Australia, Europe, Russia, South America and others. Read through the following lines, to know more interesting and amazing information on the history, origin and background of Chevrolet.

Interesting & Amazing Information On Origin & Background Of Chevrolet
Chevrolet Motor Car Company was co-founded by Louis Chevrolet and William C. Durant in Michigan on 8 November, 1911. Louis Chevrolet was a race car driver, while Durant was the founder of General Motors who had been forced out of the company in 1910. Prior to founding GM, Durant headed Buick Motor Company where Louis Chevrolet was hired for driving Buicks in promotional races. Etienne Planche designed the first Chevy, the costly Series C Classic Six, as instructed by friend Chevrolet. The “bowtie” emblem was first used by Chevrolet in 1913. The logo is said to be inspired from the wallpaper that Durant once saw in a French hotel.

In 1915, Chevrolet went to Toronto, Canada to check the possibility of setting up production facilities in Canada. He met “Colonel Sam” McLaughlin, owner of McLaughlin Motor Car Company that manufactured the McLaughlin Buick. They agreed to operate Chevrolet Motor Car Company of Canada, headed by McLaughlin. Three years down the line, both the operations were purchased by General Motors to become General Motors of Canada Ltd. By 1916, Chevrolet had earned profits, making it a possibility for Durant to buy shares in GM. The deal was finalized in 1917 with Durant becoming the president of GM and Chevrolet merging into GM.

A year later in 1918, Model D, a V8-powered model was introduced by Chevrolet. This feature was available in four-seater roadster and five-seater tourer. In 1926, General Motors (Australia) Pvt. Ltd. was established in 5 Australian states to produce and assemble Chevrolet and other GM vehicles. Chevrolet highly influenced the American market during the 1950s and 1960s. In fact, during this reign, GM was twice the size of the second biggest company in the world, Standard Oil of New Jersey. In 1963, one out of every ten cars sold in the United States was a Chevrolet. The large and luxurious Impala was introduced in 1958, which was soon followed by the innovative air-cooled rear-engined Corvair in 1960.

In 1962, production of Chevrolet began in Chile with local partners Avayu and Nova II. The company entered operating in Venezuela in 1948 with the production of trucks. Ever since then, Chevrolet has made a mark in several other countries across the globe, selling different vehicles and variants. Chevrolet also entered the watch industry in 2007, launching its first collection under the Louis Chevrolet watch brand. This collection paid tribute to the co-founder Louis Chevrolet, who was born in a family of a watchmaker. The collection offers automatic, manually-wound and quartz models, equipped with ETA and Ronda movements.

In 2009, China became Chevrolet’s third largest market, after the United States and Brazil. In India, General Motors India had been selling Opel Corsa, Opel Astra and Opel Vectra until June, 2003. Presently, Chevrolet Cruze, Chevrolet Spark, Chevrolet Optra, Chevrolet Aveo, Chevrolet Tavera, Chevrolet Captiva, Chevrolet SRV, Chevrolet Beat and Chevrolet Aveo U-VA are being sold in the Indian market. The second generation Aveo is likely to enter the world automobile market in the summer of 2010. The upcoming models under the Chevrolet brand worldwide are the plug-in hybrid Chevrolet Volt, Chevrolet Spark, Caprice Police Interceptor and Volt MPV5, which are expected to hit the market in between 2011 and 2013.

Chevrolet Trax crossover headed to Paris, not bound for U.S.

Chevrolet Trax crossover - front three-quarter dynamic image

If you're wondering why the name Trax sounds familiar, it's because we've heard it before. That's right, General Motors' chunky little crossover concept has blossomed into the production CUV you see here, and might we say, it's quite a handsome little thing.

Details about the new Trax are scarce, but since it looks to be based on the same high-riding platform derived from the Sonic that underpins the Buick Encore and Opel Mokka, so we'd expect the powertrains to simply carry over unchanged.

But know this: General Motors has no plans to offer the Trax in the United States, citing "the strong position of the Equinox" as the reason why it won't be offered Stateside. That's a shame, too. In our opinion, this baby Bowtie certainly makes more sense than the frumpy Buick Encore that doesn't really seem to fit with its brand. We suspect that Chevy dealers won't get this vehicle in part because GM wants to protect the Buick's positioning and price when it heads to U.S. dealers later this year.

The Trax will make its official debut at the Paris Motor Show in late September. For now, click the image above for a high-resolution version and scroll down to read GM's official release.

Chevrolet Will Add New Small SUV to Global Lineup

Trax will debut at Paris Motor Show and be sold in more than 140 countries

DETROIT – The Chevrolet Trax, an all-new small sport utility vehicle, will join the Chevrolet global portfolio and make its debut at the Paris Motor Show in September.

With room for five passengers and class-leading cargo space, Trax will meet the needs of customers in more than 140 markets. Mexico will be the first market to launch the crossover in the fourth quarter of this year. Because of the strong position of the Equinox, there are no plans to introduce the Trax in the U.S. market.

"The Trax provides Chevrolet an entry into a growing small SUV segment and delivers the flexibility, great fuel economy and car-like handling that urban explorers around the world require," said Mary Barra, GM senior vice president of Product Development. "After a record sales year in 2011 and a record first quarter, Chevrolet continues to meet customer needs by expanding its portfolio with strong new entries."

Chevrolet has recently introduced a new Malibu mid-sized sedan, Colorado pickup, TrailBlazer mid-sized SUV and Cruze station wagon. When it joins its siblings in the showroom, Trax will possess the same pioneering spirit and expressive design that defines each new Chevrolet.

Trax exhibits its SUV toughness and capability in a small package through a muscular exterior design and wide athletic stance. While its contemporary form evolves the global Chevrolet design aesthetic, Trax's interior and details will be executed to standards usually found in more expensive vehicles.

Founded in 1911 in Detroit, Chevrolet is now one of the world's largest car brands, doing business in more than 140 countries and selling more than 4 million cars and trucks a year. Chevrolet provides customers with fuel-efficient vehicles that feature spirited performance, expressive design and high quality. More information on Chevrolet models can be found at www.chevrolet.com.

Chevrolet COPO Camaro concept confirmed for production

Chevrolet COPO Camaro concept confirmed for production

Chevrolet has announced plans to build a production version of the COPO Camaro concept.
Designed to compete in the NHRA Stock Eliminator and Super Stock classes, the production model will have a solid rear axle and be available in five colors: Flat Black, Summit White, Victory Red, Silver Ice Metallic and Ashen Gray Metallic.
The race-spec interior is stripped of all non-essential equipment but has bucket seats, a chrome moly roll cage, additional instrumentation and a competition shifter.
Under the hood, three engines will be available: a naturally-aspirated 7.0-liter V8 and two supercharged 5.3-liter V8s.  All of them will be connected to a Powerglide automatic transmission which has been specifically designed for drag racing.
Only 69 units will be built for 2012 and they will be priced from $89,000. The first owners have already been hand-picked and deliveries are scheduled to begin early this summer.

Chevrolet addresses American myths about diesel

Chevrolet addresses American myths about diesel

In recognizing a lack of awareness by Americans about diesel fuel, GM has released an infographic to set the record straight. And it's about time as GM plans to introduce its 2.0-liter clean turbo diesel version of the Chevrolet Cruze next year in the U.S.
Addressing common myths surrounding diesel fuel and the operating behavior of diesel engines GM emphasizes:
diesels are not dirty
diesels do not run rough
diesels are not loud
diesels start perfectly in cold weather
diesels fuel is not hard to find
To put into perspective how important this is for GM let's look at a few U.S. market statistics:
U.S. first quarter 2012 diesel sales up 35 percent
diesel car sales grew more than 27 percent last year
diesel sales projected to double to 6 percent by 2015
Outside of the U.S. General Motors sold more than half a million diesel-powered cars across Europe, Asia, Africa and South America, which includes 33,000 Cruzes. The Chevrolet Cruze is also one of the top-selling gasoline-powered cars in the U.S. in 2011 and General Motors' best-selling model globally.
So expect more pro-diesel PR to come from the General as Chevrolet establishes itself as the only domestic automaker to offer a diesel-powered compact car.
As for the foreign automakers such as Volkswagen with well established diesel model ranges, we're sure they're happy about GM's efforts as well.

2014 Chevrolet Impala takes shape, will built in Oshawa

There isn’t a whole lot to get excited about in the world of quasi-luxury, full-size, front-wheel-drive sedans. There isn't a whole lot to get excited about in the world of near-luxury, full-size, front-wheel-drive sedans. Stalwarts like the Ford Taurus and Toyota Avalon continue to make their way into the driveways of gray-haired shoppers, and new entries like the redesigned Hyundai Azera are attempting to add a little bit of spice to an otherwise bland segment. In recent years, the Chevrolet Impala has nearly fallen off the map in this class simply because it hasn't been seriously updated since its launch in 2005 as a 2006 model. (The big four-door did get a new engine for 2012, finally.) But that's all about to change.

The 2014 Impala will be based on the same front-wheel-drive Epsilon-II architecture that underpins the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu and Cadillac XTS. But instead of sharing many of its components with the 'Bu, reports indicate that the Impala will use a lot of the features of the XTS in an effort to give it a much more premium feel than the current model. And while the majority of the new car's styling details are still covered up by the heavy camouflage, we can see premium features like large alloy wheels and what appear to be LED running lights up front. We just hope General Motors  hasn't just taken the easy way out and created a Malibu on steroids.

Mum's the word on powertrain offerings, but earlier reports have suggested that GM's direct-injected 3.6-liter V6 will be on board, as well as the new 2.0-liter turbo four that's slated for use in the Cadillac ATS. An eAssist version is also rumored to be in the cards.

Look for the 2014 Impala to launch sometime during the 2013 calendar year. Production is slated to be split between GM's Oshawa, Ontario plant, as well as the Detroit-Hamtramck facility where the Malibu and Voltare built.

Chevy Malibu's 2013 with turbo four rated at 259 HP, 0-60 in 6.3 seconds

"The 2013 Malibu is the latest entry in Chevrolet's growing global car portfolio, which has seen almost an entirely revamped lineup in the last 15 months," said Chris Perry, global Chevrolet marketing vice president. "We sold 4.76 million Chevys worldwide in 2011 - one every 6.5 seconds - and the new Malibu will help us grow the brand globally even more this year, where it will be introduced for the first time in many markets."

2013_Chevy_Malibu-Eco-063.jpg
We weren't exactly smitten with the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco when we got the chance to take one out for a spin, thanks in part to the eAssist wizardry aimed at improving the vehicle's fuel economy. With a lackluster drivetrain, regenerative brakes and low rolling resistance tries, the Malibu Eco simply isn't capable of keeping its head high among the competition.

Even so, we were told to wait for the Ecotec 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder set to debut this year. Now we know why. According to General Motors, the engine is good for 269 259 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. More importantly, all that torque comes on at a very low 1,700 rpm.

The direct-injection engine helps the Malibu hit 60 mph in a scant 6.3 seconds. Trust us when we say that's an improvement over the Eco model. While there's no word on fuel economy, we would expect the engine to return well better than the 17 mpg city and 26 mpg highway supplied by the outgoing 3.6-liter V6, an engine that was only good for 252 horsepower.

This isn't the first time GM has dabbled with a turbocharged four-cylinder. The company supplied buyers with a 2.0-liter Ecotec in vehicles like the Pontiac Solstice GXPHHR SS and Cobalt SS that put out 260 horsepower. See below for the full press release.
Power-Dense Powertrains Drive Malibu's Global Rollout

Chevrolet midsize style and performance introduced to more than 70 countries this year

DETROIT – The all-new Ecotec 2.5L debuting on the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu midsize sedan this summer is one of the most-powerful naturally aspirated four-cylinder engines in the midsize segment, topping the output from the new Ford Fusion and Toyota Camry. It will be joined this fall by a new Ecotec 2.0L turbo engine, delivering more horsepower than any previous V-6 offered in a Malibu.

Malibu's Ecotec 2.5L delivers an SAE-certified 197 horsepower (147 kW) and 191 lb.-ft. of torque (259 Nm) – the most torque of any naturally aspirated four-cylinder in the segment. And when compared with the competition, it delivers 19 more horsepower (14 kW) and 21 more lb.-ft. of torque (28 Nm) than the 2012 Toyota Camry LE's 2.5L I4 engine, and 27 more horsepower (20 kW) and 21 more lb.-ft. (28 Nm) than the 2013 Ford Fusion's 2.5L four-cylinder.

The Ecotec 2.0L turbo is SAE-certified at 259 horsepower (193 kW) and 260 lb.-ft. of torque (353 Nm). Its peak torque is sustained from 1,700 to 5,500 rpm – a broad range that provides an immediate feeling of power in all driving conditions and helps produce 0-60 performance in 6.3 seconds.

The new engines feature direct injection for increased fuel efficiency and higher power, and help drive Malibu's performance around the world. Both will be offered in the United States, Canada, Israel and other markets, while rounding out a diverse North American powertrain lineup that also includes the segment-exclusive, fuel-saving eAssist™ technology in the Malibu Eco. It combines start-stop technology with regenerative braking and a lightweight lithium-ion battery to provide an electric boost in certain conditions, delivering a GM-estimated 25 mpg in the city 37 mpg on the highway. That's better fuel economy than any non-hybrid midsize sedan currently available.

"The 2013 Malibu is the latest entry in Chevrolet's growing global car portfolio, which has seen almost an entirely revamped lineup in the last 15 months," said Chris Perry, global Chevrolet marketing vice president. "We sold 4.76 million Chevys worldwide in 2011 – one every 6.5 seconds – and the new Malibu will help us grow the brand globally even more this year, where it will be introduced for the first time in many markets."

The 2013 Malibu is Chevrolet's first global midsize sedan and will eventually be sold in nearly 100 countries on six continents. It is already on sale in South Korea and China, with sales to begin this year in more than 70 additional countries, including Canada, throughout Europe, Scandinavia, the Middle East, Africa and other Asia-Pacific markets.

In the United States, current generation Malibu sales are up 4.4 percent for the first two months of the year, building on 2011's near-record U.S. sales of nearly 205,000.

The new Malibu was designed to be the most finely tuned Chevrolet midsize sedan ever and is built on an award-winning global architecture that helps deliver a more confident, responsive and connected driving experience. The body structure is 20-percent stiffer for a greater feeling of solidity, quietness and quality.

Inside, the 2013 Malibu delivers:

1.5 inches (38 mm) more front shoulder room
3.5 inches (89 mm) more rear shoulder room
2.7 inches (68 mm) more front hip room
2.8 inches (71 mm) more rear hip room
More than 1 cubic foot (28 liters) more trunk space
Nearly 4 cubic feet (113 liters) of additional EPA interior volume.

Malibu's driving experience is also enhanced with Chevrolet MyLink, an all-new in-car infotainment package that gives customers a higher level of wireless connectivity and customized infotainment options while building on the safety and security of OnStar. MyLink is safe and easy to use. It adds stereo audio streaming and wireless control of smartphones, building on the voice-activated Bluetooth hands-free calling capability already offered in most Chevy vehicles. My Link is standard in LT, LTZ and Eco Malibu models, along with a seven-inch, high-resolution, full-color touch screen display that makes media selection easy to navigate. The radio face also swivels up to reveal a hidden and illuminated storage area.

The Chevrolet Malibu Eco is on sale now and priced less than a full hybrid vehicle, with a suggested retail price of $25,995, including a $760 destination charge. Additional models go on sale this summer, followed by the Malibu Turbo this fall.

Chevrolet WTCC champions – twice in a row

We love being number one. Chevrolet has cemented its domination of the FIA World Touring car Championship (WTCC). The team swooped to victory again this year, winning both the driver and the manufacturer titles – twice in a row.
The manufacturer title was actually sealed in September after the Chevrolet team built up an unassailable lead – too many points to catch. However, the driver title went to the wire, with all three Chevrolet drivers in contention.

Yvan Muller re-takes his WTCC driver’s title

After a truly nail-biting finish, Frenchman Yvan Muller emerged as the winner of the WTCC driver’s competition, after successfully fending off his own Chevrolet team mates, Britain’s Rob Huff and Swiss driving legend Alain Menu – who finished in second and third places respectively. This extraordinary feat means Yvan retains his dominance at the top of this exciting global competition.
Read more about the competition and find out more about the drivers on the Chevrolet WTCC site.

DETROIT – General Motors will develop an all-new global family of small-displacement Ecotec gasoline engines over the next several years that will give customers in markets around the world improved fuel economy, higher quality, better performance and reduced carbon dioxide emissions.
Chev
The program could encompass more than 2 million engines a year by the end of the decade.
The new global engine family will comprise a range of three- and four-cylinder engines – in displacements from 1.0L to 1.5L – engineered and manufactured in multiple regions for global use. They will feature lightweight design and advanced technologies such as direct injection, turbocharging and alternative fuel compatibility to provide customers with both efficiency and on-demand performance. The new engine family also will be designed to reduce noise, vibration and harshness, a common trait of smaller engines.
“Our customers around the world agree we need to reduce our dependence on petroleum and reduce vehicle carbon emissions,” said Jim Federico, vehicle line executive for GM global small cars and electric vehicles. “We are working aggressively on vehicle electrification and other technologies, but the most immediate progress will come from continually improving the internal combustion engine.”
The global engine family consolidation is part of GM’s larger product development strategy to reduce engineering and manufacturing complexity and cost while improving competitiveness, efficiency and quality.
For example, to reduce engineering and manufacturing complexity, the engines will be designed and built using a modular approach with interchangeable global components. This also provides more flexibility for global vehicle programs.
Production is expected to begin mid-decade. The engines will be introduced in GM global vehicle programs across multiple vehicle architectures in various regions, through the end of the decade. Manufacturing locations and production timing will be announced later.
The new engine family is the result of an engineering partnership between GM and the Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp. (SAIC), Shanghai General Motors (SGM) and the Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC).
